A 40-Year-Old Artwork That Almost Disappeared

The Survivor artwork representing resilience, hope and human perseverance.

The Survivor began as the root of a guava tree in Kerala, India. Beneath the soil it grew, twisted and held its ground, shaped by pressure, seasons and time rather than by any tool.

More than 40 years on, this root outlived its original purpose. At one point it was considered a discarded object, something destined to be burned along with things nobody thought were worth keeping.

But the artist could not let that happen. He rescued it and kept it with him for more than 30 years, through different phases of life, different places and different struggles, not because he had a grand plan for it, but because he believed it deserved to survive.

The form you see today is, almost entirely, the earth's own work. The human hand has been deliberately restrained: only minor carving and a careful polish, to reveal what was already there.

What Does It Mean to Survive?

We often imagine survival as something dramatic: impossible battles, extraordinary obstacles, heroic decisions. But survival is not always dramatic.

Sometimes it is getting out of bed when you don't know how to face another day. Sometimes it is continuing when everything seems to be falling apart. Sometimes it is admitting you don't know what to do, and choosing to learn rather than surrender.

The Survivor represents survival, belief, resilience, hope and the refusal to give up on the possibility that things can become better.

Why I Called It The Survivor

I don't think this artwork survived simply because I kept it. It survived because, at some point, someone believed it was worth saving.

How many possibilities do we discard because we fail to recognise their value at the time? How often do we mistake a difficult chapter for the end of the entire story?

Something does not lose its worth simply because it has been discarded, forgotten or overlooked. Our present circumstances do not necessarily define our future, and hope is not something we should casually surrender.

It held the weight of a living tree.

It bent. It endured. It survived.

Portrait of the artist, Abhimanue Udayan

Founder of Hexagon Know

My journey began with its share of struggles, but also with an enduring curiosity about the world and a desire to create something meaningful. I started exploring entrepreneurship at just 12 years old, driven by an early fascination with ideas, technology, and building things. I went on to complete my postgraduate studies in Physics and gradually found my calling at the intersection of technology, education, and innovation.

Over the years, I have worked on technology-driven learning solutions and educational applications that have helped children across the world access knowledge in new ways. Through this journey, I discovered how technology and education can transform lives, and how powerful that transformation can be when it reaches those who need it most.

The Survivor was born from this belief. To me, survival is not just about finding the strength to move forward; it is also about extending a hand to help others find their way. It represents resilience, hope, and the possibility of turning our experiences into something meaningful for others.

The net proceeds from the sale of The Survivor, after applicable costs and deductions, will be dedicated to educational opportunities for underprivileged students through HK Skill. I hope this artwork will inspire more than admiration; I hope it will help change lives.

"Innovation taught me how to build.
Nature taught me how to see."
